Course description:
Basic Life Support (BLS) is the foundation for saving lives after cardiac arrest. The Heart and Stroke Foundation’s BLS course offers the latest resuscitation science for improved patient outcomes and incorporates the 2020 resuscitation guidelines. This course trains participants to promptly recognize several life-threatening emergencies, give high-quality chest compressions, deliver appropriate ventilations, and provide early use of an AED. It includes adult, child, and infant rescue techniques. It teaches both single-rescuer and team basic life support skills for application in both in-facility and pre-hospital settings, with a focus on high-quality CPR and team dynamics.
Course Overview:
The BLS Provider Course focuses on what rescuers need to know to perform high-quality CPR in a wide variety of settings. Course contents and outcomes include:
- Importance of high-quality CPR and its impact on survival
- Steps of the Chain of Survival and applying the BLS concepts of the Chain of Survival
- Recognize the signs of someone needing CPR
- Perform high-quality CPR for adults, children and infants (Both 1 person and 2 person rescue)
- Importance of early defibrillation and use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
- Rescue breathing, use of a barrier device, and bag-valve-mask for effective ventilations
- Importance of teams in multi-rescuer resuscitation and performing as an effective team member during multi-rescuer CPR
- Choking in adults, children and infants
BLS includes an open book written exam in addition to skills testing. Upon successful completion, you will receive certification in CPR and AED to meet job, regulatory or other requirements.
All Heart and Stroke Foundation certificates are valid for 1 year from the date of successful course completion.
