Who is Heartsaver® for?

Heartsaver® is the Canadian standard in CPR and AED training. This course is designed for everyday Canadians who don’t have medical training but who want to learn how to help someone having a cardiac arrest. This straightforward, yet comprehensive, course provides you with the skills and confidence to respond to a cardiac arrest or choking emergency at home, in public, or at work.

Heartsaver® is ideal for teachers, community and church volunteers, and families with children, infants, or seniors.

Why is Heartsaver ® important for me?

Cardiac arrest can happen to anyone, at any age, at any time. The vast majority (85 per cent) of cardiac arrests happen at home, in public places and workplaces. If you ever witness a cardiac arrest, chances are it will happen to a family member or someone you work with or care about. It is a life-threatening emergency, but by using skills you will learn through the Heartsaver® CPR AED course, you can double or even triple the person’s chance of survival.

Course Overview and Design:

The Heartsaver® CPR AED course focuses on what you need to know to perform high-quality CPR for adults, children, and infants, and how to use an AED effectively. You will also learn how to respond to choking emergencies. Course contents and outcomes include:

  • How high-quality CPR improves survival
  • The concepts of the Chain of Survival
  • Recognizing when someone needs CPR
  • Perform high-quality CPR for an adult, child, and infant
  • How to perform CPR with the help of others
  • Give effective rescue breaths using mouth-to-mouth or a mask, for adult, child, and infant
  • How to use an AED on an adult and child
  • When and how to help a choking adult, child, and infant

Heartsaver® CPR AED (C) Course Duration: Approximately 4 hours

The Heartsaver® CPR AED (C) course includes a mandatory open book written exam in addition to skills testing. Upon successful completion, you will receive certification in CPR and AED to meet job, regulatory or other requirements.

All Heart and Stroke Foundation certificates are valid for 1 year from the date of successful course completion.
